Alibaba, the Chinese ecommerce company that has long #173;connected US brands to Chinese suppliers, now wants to help sell goods to American #173;consumers. The company, which is poised for an initial public offering that analysts say could value it at more than 0bn, announced yesterday that it would launch its first majority-owned ecommerce venture in the US. Two of Alibaba’s US subsidiaries, Vendio and Auctiva, will soon launch a business-to-consumer site, called 11 Main. Alibaba did not give further details about 11 Main beyond describing it as a boutique ecommerce platform selling “interesting quality products” from “handpicked shop owners”. The move is the latest by Alibaba to seek additional sources of growth. Alibaba’s sites control 80 per cent of China’s ecommerce, and revenues from those sites last quarter grew by more than half to .78bn, but the rate of growth has slowed since last year. Earlier this week, it made an unsolicited bid to take private AutoNavi, in an all-cash deal that values the mapping company at .6bn. The deal would allow Alibaba to improve its mobile commerce capabilities. Alibaba is also expanding into wealth management services and taxi hailing apps in China. Alibaba now markets in the US mainly using Aliexpress, an English language website intended to connect US businesses with wholesalers in China. It operates mostly in emerging markets such as Russia, India, Chile and Brazil, but also in the US. A person with knowledge of the 11 Main launch cautioned against portraying it as a foray by Alibaba into the US, saying that despite having full ownership the venture wouild be run independently by its two subsidiaries. Several banks, including Barclays, Citi and Royal Bank of Scotland, have banned the use of most group chat rooms in moves that highlight how global probes into alleged benchmark manipulations are driving a radical reform of trading floors. Investigations into the Libor interbank lending rate manipulation scandal prompted RBS sometime last year to ban unmonitored chat rooms where traders used to discuss market topics with rivals, two people familiar with those measures said. “The bank clamped down on this big time. I think we were even going slightly overboard on this,” one senior banker said. Citi two months ago banned traders’ chat rooms with multiple banks, restricting instant messages to conversations with traders at one bank at a time. Barclays, which like the other two banks declined to comment, made similar reforms last year. Executives at JPMorgan are also examining whether conversations on so-called “multi-dealer” chat rooms cannot be carried out bilaterally over the phone. Banks are re-evaluating their messaging systems as they grapple with the fallout from the Libor scandal and a global probe into alleged manipulation of the .3tn a day foreign exchange market, the latest in a series of benchmark-related rate-rigging investigations. At least eight regulators in the UK, US, Switzerland and Hong Kong are involved in investigating more than 15 banks. That has so far triggered the suspension of at least a dozen traders across the globe amid suspicions that chat rooms were used to share sensitive client information. /201311/265710It#39;s a sad day for Finland. Or is it? Sure, much of the phonemaker#39;s storied legacy -- and future -- is now in Microsoft#39;s hands, a bitter pill to swallow for many Finns. And yes, 32,000 Nokia employees will become part of the Redmond-based tech giant#39;s empire overnight, whether they like it or not. But Nokia#39;s (NOK) downward spiral began a long time ago, and the company wasn#39;t headed toward any kind of happy ending, with or without Microsoft (MSFT) swooping in to buy its devices and services business for .2 billion. What#39;s more, the deal may actually give the Finnish brand a sliver of a chance to regain some of its lost momentum. Especially if Stephen Elop -- yes, the Nokia CEO and former Microsoft exec now blamed for this most recent turn of events -- lands the top job in Redmond. Nokia, once the top smartphone manufacturer in the world, no longer cracks the top five. Sales of its Lumia line of phones have been growing, but not fast enough to offset massive drops in other products. In the company#39;s most recent quarter, revenue fell 24% compared with the prior year. Its stock has been in decline for years. What happened? There were many causes for the downfall, but arrogance and a misguided focus on growing market share no matter the costs are two big ones. Like BlackBerry (BBRY), Nokia didn#39;t take the iPhone#39;s 2007 debut seriously. The U.S. market -- now home to the two leading smartphone operating systems in the world, Apple#39;s (AAPL) iOS and Google#39;s (GOOG) Android -- was merely an afterthought. And even as the world around them was changing, company execs clung to Symbian, Nokia#39;s aging operating system, for far too long. By the time Elop came on board in 2010, Nokia#39;s reputation and market share were aly tanking. ;What has happened over the last couple of years is there has been a shift from a battle of devices to a war of ecosystems,; Elop told an audience of mobile developers at a Qualcomm (QCOM) conference in 2011. Sure enough, soon after he took over the company, the CEO made a series of bold moves, most significantly hitching the company#39;s fate to Microsoft#39;s Windows operating system. The resulting offspring of that marriage is Nokia#39;s Lumia line of phones. And while Elop#39;s loyalties (and ability to lead the Finnish company) have been questioned, the Lumia smartphones are probably the best thing out of Espoo in a long time.2010年,埃洛普加入诺基亚时,这家公司的声誉与市场份额都已经遭受重挫。 Elop#39;s tenure at Nokia has been controversial, but unlike insiders he had the ability to divorce the company from Symbian and make a much-needed bet on a more viable operating system (albeit not a very popular one). It may have been too little, too late, and the ;turnaround; Elop has subsequently led hasn#39;t been flawless, to say the least. But this week#39;s sale to Microsoft isn#39;t surprising given the trajectory laid out in 2011. Investors are welcoming the deal, sending Nokia#39;s share price up over 40% Tuesday morning. 40%。;We view this positively for Nokia, as we believe the path for the Device amp; Services business was fraught with peril given competitive forces and its limited product acceptance,; Maynard Um, a senior analyst with Wells Fargo, wrote in a report. ;This sale and the buyout of the Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) joint venture all but completes the transformation of Nokia into a network infrastructure-focused business.; (The remaining Nokia will consist of the company#39;s telecom equipment business, mapping technologies and an IP licensing division). What#39;s more, added Um, the sale puts more ;financial muscle; behind the combined Microsoft-Nokia portfolio of products. That is, of course, if Microsoft plays its cards right. The software giant doesn#39;t have a good track record when it comes to hardware. Or acquisitions. But Elop#39;s return into the fold could be helpful to the future of Nokia#39;s handset line. Current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently announced he will be stepping down in the coming months, and many have weighed in on the list of potential successors. It#39;s no surprise that Elop is now a top contender as well. The former insider knows the company well (he once ran its Office division). But after three years at Nokia, he also knows the handset manufacturing world much better than most Microsoft execs. As part of Microsoft#39;s acquisition, Elop will step down as CEO of Nokia and take on the devices and services division at Microsoft, a big chunk of which will be made up of the former Nokia business. That means Elop may become the handset business#39; (and former Nokia employees#39;) greatest hope. If he becomes CEO of Microsoft in the months to come, that may bode even better for the handset manufacturer formerly known as Nokia, painful as that admission may be to the Finns.

The hospital room may be due for a checkup. Doctors and nurses, architects and designers all say the room setting has an important but largely neglected role to play in the delivery of quality care and outcomes. Consider infections. One out of every 20 patients admitted to a hospital picks up an infection while there, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These infections can be serious and deadly, and they cost the U.S. billion a year. But recent studies indicate that at least half can be avoided. And the design of patient rooms is one of the best places to start. The hospital room has changed little since the post-World War II years, when there was a shift to semiprivate rooms from wards. But even then, the patient wasn#39;t central to the plan. Now, the patient room of the future is being designed as a safe, private, comfortable place conducive to healing. #39;With all the knowledge we#39;ve gained,#39; says Douglas Wood, director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, #39;we can increasingly create an environment in the hospital to minimize the transmission of bacteria, increase the circulation of air, and reduce pain, discomfort and poor clinical outcomes.#39; Hospital officials from across the U.S. and abroad have traveled to New York to see the prototype patient room shown here. Designed by NXT Health, a nonprofit in New York, and funded by the Department of Defense, the room is designed to reduce infections, falls, errors -- and ultimately costs. Here#39;s a look at how it would do so. 1. Patient Ribbon 1#8226;“病人环带”The canopy above the bed, the patient ribbon, extends from the head wall to the footwall. It contains electrical, technological and gas components normally found in any hospital room. It also includes a sound system that can create a cocoon above the patient#39;s head to block out unwanted noise and minimize the transmission of noise to other areas of the room. 2. Halo Lightbox 2. The halo lightbox in the patient ribbon above the bed can be programmed for mood or light therapy, and can simulate cloud movements, blue skies and other lighting conditions. 3. Head Wall 3. The head wall contains the equipment needed to check vital signs (heartbeat, breathing rate, temperature and blood pressure), as well as oxygen and other supplies, all stowed neatly out of sight but easily accessible through pull-down panels in the wall. 4. Footwall 4. The footwall contains a large screen that can be used for entertainment, consultations with doctors, and access to hospital information, educational content and social-media sites. It#39;s controlled from the bed by a tablet computer that allows the patient to adjust lighting, sound, and temperature. 5. Rubber Floors 5. The floors are made of low-porosity rubber, which doesn#39;t contain or need chemical sealers or waxes that often trap bacteria and other substances that can cause infections and allergic reaction. Rubber is quieter, softer and less slippery than other traditional floor materials. In case of a fall, it reduces impact. 6. Room Surfaces 6. All surfaces in the room other than the floor are made of Corian or similar solid-surface materials commonly found in homes as kitchen countertops. The material is nonporous and seamless, making it easy to clean and minimizing the chances for mold, mildew or bacteria to grow. That all reduces the risk of infection. 7. Entry Workstation 7. The workstation is located at the entrance to the patient room. As a staff member or other person enters, the sink lights up in red to indicate that hands should be washed. When hands are disinfected, a green light blinks. A dashboard in the wall stores a computer, where information on the patient can be found and entered. 8. Bedside Caregiver Hub 8. At the bedside caregiver hub, a wall panel holds another computer. Other technology is embedded in the wall, and when the panel is closed, ultraviolet light kills bacteria that might have formed on surfaces. The computer keyboard, like all others in the room, is a flat, nonporous typing surface that#39;s easy and quick to clean, unlike conventional keyboards, which can harbor bacteria. 9. Patient Companion 9. The mobile patient companion contains both an eating surface and a flat computer when flipped over. Operated by touch, the computer controls the screen on the footwall and the light and sound in the patient area. The surface has colored rings to indicate when power is low and icons to touch to call for help.
