Thats how we forged a Trans-Pacific Partnership to open markets, protect workers and the environment, and advance American leadership in Asia. It cuts 18,000 taxes on products Made in America, which will then support more good jobs here in America. With TPP, China doesnt set the rules in that region, we do. You want to show our strength in this century? Approve this agreement. Give us the tools to enforce it. Its the right thing to do. Fifty years of isolating Cuba had failed to promote democracy, it set us back in Latin America. Thats why we restored diplomatic relations, opened the door to travel and commerce, position ourselves to improve the lives of the Cuban people. So if you want to consolidate our leadership and credibility in the hemisphere, recognize that the Cold War is over. Lift the embargo. The point is American leadership in the 21st century is not a choice between ignoring the rest of the world except when we kill terrorists; or occupying and rebuilding whatever society is unraveling.21世纪,美国体现领导力的方式并非只有下面两个选择:除了打击恐怖主义,再不关心其他世界事务;抑或,占领和重建每个正在土崩瓦解的社会。Leadership means a wise application of military power, and rallying the world behind causes that are right. It means seeing our foreign assistance as part of our national security, not something separate, not charity. When we lead nearly 200 nations to the most ambitious agreement in history to fight climate change yes that helps vulnerable countries, but it also protects our kids. 201602/427839

I want to spend just a moment talking about我想只花一点点时间来谈论the model that weve developed, which allows us to start at the top我们所发展而来的那个模型,那个允许我们从高处开始的模型and look at the drivers of sound, analyze the soundscape看一下那司机的声音,分析下声音的范围,and then predict the four outcomes Ive just talked about. Or start at the bottom,或者按下按钮,and say what outcomes do we want,并说说我们希望怎样的结果,and then design a soundscape to have a desired effect. At last weve got some science we can apply. And were in the business of designing soundscapes. Just a word on music. Music is the most powerful sound there is,关于音乐就说一句。 Its powerful for two reasons. You recognize it fast,因为有两个原因使其强大。首先你很快认出了它and you associate it very powerfully. Ill give you two examples. Most of you recognize that immediately. And most of you associate that with something! Now, those are one-second samples of music. Music is very powerful. 但是不幸的是its veneering commercial spaces, often inappropriately. I hope thats going to change over the next few years. Let me just talk about brands for a moment,让我们先谈论一会儿商标品牌,because some of you run brands. Every brand is out there因为你们中有些事经营品牌企业的。所有的品牌如今making sound right now. There are eight expressions of a brand in sound. They are all important. And every brand needs to have guidelines at the center. Im glad to say that is starting to happen now. You all recognize that one. This is the你们都认得出那个声音。这个是most-played tune in the world today. 1.8 billion times a day, that tune is played. And it cost Nokia absolutely nothing. Just leave you with four golden rules, for those of you who run businesses,这就给你们这些经商的人留下了四条黄金法则,for commercial sound. First, make it congruent,首先,有一致性,pointing in the same direction as your visual communication. That increases impact by over 1,100 percent. If your sound is pointing the opposite direction, incongruent,如果你那声音和画面不一致,指向相反方向,you reduce impact by 86 percent. Thats an order of magnitude, up or down. Secondly, make it appropriate to the situation. Thirdly, make it valuable. Give people something with the sound. Dont just bombard them with stuff. And, finally, test and test it again. Sound is complex. There are many countervailing influences. It can be a bit like a bowl of spaghetti:就如一大碗通心粉:sometimes you just have to eat it and see what happens. So I hope this talk has raised sound in your consciousness.所以我希望这个关于声音的演讲可以提升你的意识If youre listening consciously,如果你用心听,you can take control of the sound around you. Its good for your health. Its good for your productivity. If we all do that we move to a state如果我们都那么做,我们就进入了that I like to think will be sound living in the world. Im going to leave you with a little bit more birdsong. I recommend at least five minutes a day, but there is no maximum dose. Thank you for lending me your ears today. 201504/367731

Ive always wanted to be a cyborg. One of my favorite shows as a kid was ;The Six Million Dollar Man,;我小时候最喜欢的电视剧之一是“无敌金刚”,它的造价是六百万美元。and this is a little bit closer to the 240 dollar man or so, but --而这玩意儿的价值挺相近的,大约是240万美元,但是——At at any rate. I would normally feel very self-conscious and geeky wearing this around,不管怎样。而且我经常会感到拘谨,感觉有点儿怪异,穿着这个走来走去,but a few days ago I saw one world-renowned statistician swallowing swords on stage here,嗯,但是呢,今天前我看见一位举世闻名的数据专家在这个舞台上吞剑,so I figure its OK amongst this group. But thats not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about toys, and the power that I see inherent in them. When I was a kid, I attended Montessori school up to sixth grade in Atlanta, Georgia. And at the time I didnt think much about it,那时,我并没有觉得有啥了不起。but then later, I realized that that was the high point of my education. From that point on, everything else was pretty much downhill. And it wasnt until later, as I started making games, that --等到后来,当我开始制作电脑游戏,那时我真的——I really actually think of them more as toys. People call me a game designer, but I really think of these things more as toys. But I started getting very interested in Maria Montessori and her methods,我开始对玛利亚·蒙特梭利和她的教育方法and the way she went about things,以及她的处事方式感兴趣。and the way she thought it very valuable for kids to kind of discover things on their own她很重视让孩子们自己去发现,rather than being taught these things overtly. And she would design these toys, where kids in playing with the toys她会设计一些寓教于乐的玩具,would actually come to understand these deep principles of life and nature through play. And since they discovered those things, it really stuck with them so much more,因为这些道理是他们自己发现的,所以他们就会牢牢记住它们,and also they would experience their own failures;而且他们还会经历失败,there was a failure-based aspect to learning there. It was very important. And so, the games that I do, I think of really more as modern Montessori toys. And I really kind of want them to be presented in a way并且我真心希望它们能够帮助小孩们to where kids can kind of explore and discover their own principles. So a few years ago, I actually started getting very interested in the SETI program. And thats the way I work. I get interested in different kinds of subjects, I dive in,我对各种领域都有兴趣,我潜入其中,I research them, and then I try to figure out how to craft a toy around that,探索研究它,然后想办法做出一种与之相关的游戏,so that other people can kind of experience the same sense of discovery这样其他人就能体验到和我在学习这个课题时as I did as I was learning that subject. And it kind of led me to astrobiology, which is the study of possible life in the universe. And then Drakes Equation, which is looking at the probability of life arising on planets,然后是德瑞克方程式,大家知道,它关注的是行星上可能产生生命的概率,how long it might last, how many planets are out there, stuff like that. And I started looking at how interesting Drakes Equation was,我开始关注这个极其有趣的方程,because it spanned all these different subjects --因为它涉及了各种不同的学科——physics, chemistry, sociology, economics, astronomy. And another thing that really impressed me a long time ago was ;Powers of Ten,; Charles and Ray Eames film.另一个很久以来让我印象深刻的是查尔斯·伊默斯和蕾·伊默斯夫妇的影片《十的次方》And I started putting those two together and wondering,当我把这两者合起来看时,我想到could I build a toy where kids would kind of trip across all these interesting principles of life,我能不能建造一个玩具,使得小孩们可以在生命所有的这些有趣的、as it exists and as it might go in the future. Things where you might trip across things like the Copernican Principle, the Fermi Paradox,你可能会遇到哥白尼定律、费米佯谬the Anthropic Principle, the origin of life. And so Im going to show you a toy today that Ive been working on,而我今天要向大家展示的是我正在创作中的一个玩具,that I think of more than anything else as kind of a philosophy toy. In playing this toy, you kind of -- this will bring up philosophical questions in you. This games called ;Spore.; Ive been working on it for several years. Its getting pretty close to finished now. It occurs at all these different scales, first of all, from very, very small to very, very large. Im just going to pop in at the start of the game. 201512/418290But what I know about business in life is that there are many, many, many opportunities to lose your way, there are many opportunities to lose your way because you are overcame by greed. Thats what the backdating stock option scandals about. People have been overcome by greed and they have forgotten the fundamentals about whats right and whats wrong. People can be overcome by their ambition. ;Im going to do this because if I do this I get the next job or I save the job I have.; People can be overcome by fear, I talk a lot about fear in this book because if you want to change what people are doing, you have to understand that people are afraid of change, change is always resisted, its human nature. Why is the change resisted? Because people fear the unknown; and because the nature momentum of any institution is to preserve the status quo. Why? Because the status quo preserves the position of those who hold power. It is human nature that people who have power want to keep it. And so any institution is focused on the preservation of the power of those who aly have it, human nature. If you want to transform something as we had to transform a great company called Hewlett Packard, you have to understand fear. You have to understand human motivation and you got understand the numbers. This book is about all those things, and Im gonna stop talking here in about 2 minutes so we have plenty of time for your questions. 201408/318802

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land-a nagging fear that Americas decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America-they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that predious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation; the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. 201405/302482So after traveling and talking to people在我游历俄克拉何马州和得克萨斯州in places like Oklahoma or small-town Texas,并与那里小镇上的人交谈之后,we found evidence that the initial premise was dead on. Visibility really is key. Familiarity really is the gateway drug to empathy. Once an issue pops up in your own backyard or amongst your own family,当一个问题出现在你家后院或你自己的家庭中,youre far more likely to explore sympathy for it你有大得多的可能性去同情,or explore a new perspective on it. Of course, in my travels I met people当然,在我的旅行中我遇见了who legally divorced their children for being other than straight,跟同性恋子女断绝法律关系的父母,but I also met people who were Southern Baptists但是我也看到了这样的父母,当他们知道who switched churches because their child was a lesbian. Sparking empathy had become the backbone of Self Evident Truths. But heres what I was starting to learn that was really interesting:但是接下来我发现了真正有趣的事情:Self Evident Truths doesnt erase the differences between us.“不自明的真理”并没有消除我们之间的差异。In fact, on the contrary, it highlights them. It presents, not just the complexities这体现出这件事情的复杂性,found in a procession of different human beings,不仅体现在不同的人群之间,but the complexities found within each individual person. It wasnt that we had too many boxes, it was that we had too few. At some point I realized that my mission to photograph ;gays; was inherently flawed,在某刻我意识到我拍摄“同性恋者”的计划一开始就有瑕疵,because there were a million different shades of gay.“同性恋者”这个词可以分成上百万种不同的分类。Here I was trying to help,我希望能够做点什么,and I had perpetuated the very thing I had spent my life trying to avoid --而我接下来做的事情是我毕生想要去避免的——yet another box. At some point I added a question to the release form从某刻开始我在自己的问卷中添加了一个问题,that asked people to quantify themselves要求填写者评估自己“同性恋”的程度,on a scale of one to 100 percent gay. And I watched so many existential crises unfold in front of me. People didnt know what to do人们从来没有because they had never been presented with the option before. Can you quantify your openness? Once they got over the shock, though,当他们缓过神来之后,by and large people opted for somewhere between 70 to 95 percent多人给自己的分数在70到95分or the 3 to 20 percent marks. Of course, there were lots of people who opted for a 100 percent one or the other,当然也有人认为自己是百分百的异性恋或同性恋,but I found that a much larger proportion of people但是我发现非常大比例的人identified as something that was much more nuanced. I found that most people fall on a spectrum of what I have come to refer to as ;Grey.;我发现大多数人在这个色谱上都落在“灰色”的位置。Let me be clear though -- and this is very important --我要明确一点——非常明确的一点——in no way am I saying that preference doesnt exist. And I am not even going to address the issue of choice versus biological imperative,我也没有打算去讨论这个问题是先天基因还是后天选择决定的,because if any of you happen to be of the belief但是如果你们当中有人相信that sexual orientation is a choice,性取向是后天选择的,I invite you to go out and try to be grey. Ill take your picture just for trying. What I am saying though is that human beings are not one-dimensional. 201509/400004

As a student of adversity,我从逆境中学习:Ive been struck over the years这些年来,我一次又一次by how some people被人们如何with major challenges从极大的挑战中seem to draw strength from them,得到力量而震撼,and Ive heard the popular wisdom人们说,that that has to do with finding meaning. And for a long time,很长一段时间,I thought the meaning was out there,我以为生命的意义在某一处some great truth waiting to be found. But over time, Ive come to feel但随着时间的迁移,我渐渐感到that the truth is irrelevant. We call it finding meaning,我们称它为找寻意义,but we might better call it forging meaning. My last book was about how families我上一本书讲的是家庭manage to deal with various kinds of challenging如何应对各种让人伤脑筋的,or unusual offspring,或不寻常的儿女们,and one of the mothers I interviewed,我访问了一位有两名who had two children with multiple severe disabilities,患有多重残疾的孩童的母亲,said to me, ;People always give us她对我说:“人们总是给予我们these little sayings like,一些所谓的名言,例如God doesnt give you any more than you can handle,‘上帝不会给你多过你能承载的’but children like ours但是像我家这样的孩子are not preordained as a gift. Theyre a gift because thats what we have chosen.;他们是一份礼物,是因为我们选择如此。”We make those choices all our lives. When I was in second grade,我小学二年级的时候,Bobby Finkel had a birthday party鲍比开了个生日派对and invited everyone in our class but me. My mother assumed there had been some sort of error,我妈妈认为一定是出了什么差错,and she called Mrs. Finkel,所以给鲍比的母亲打了电话,who said that Bobby didnt like me鲍比的母亲说,鲍比不喜欢我,and didnt want me at his party. And that day, my mom took me to the zoo那天,我妈妈带我去了动物园and out for a hot fudge sundae. When I was in seventh grade,我在7年级(初中一年级)时,one of the kids on my school bus我乘坐的校车上有个孩子nicknamed me ;Percy;叫我:‘波西’ (发音似女式手提包)as a shorthand for my demeanor,取笑我的言行举止,and sometimes, he and his cohort有时,他和他的伙伴would chant that provocation会在整个校车的路途上the entire school bus ride,不停的吆喝着这个挑衅,45 minutes up, 45 minutes back,去学校的45分钟,回家的45分钟,;Percy! Percy! Percy! Percy!;‘波西!波西!波西!波西!’When I was in eighth grade,当我8年级(初中二年级)的时候,our science teacher told us我们的科学老师告诉我们,that all male homosexuals所有的男性同性恋者develop fecal incontinence都会大便失禁because of the trauma to their anal sphincter. And I graduated high school我直到高中毕业,without ever going to the cafeteria,我都从没去过学校的食堂,where I would have sat with the girls在那儿我如果和女生坐在一起,and been laughed at for doing so,那么我会被笑话,or sat with the boys或者如果我和男生坐在一起and been laughed at for being a boy那么我会被笑话为一个who should be sitting with the girls. I survived that childhood through a mix我用了忍耐加上逃避,of avoidance and endurance. What I didnt know then,我当时不知道,and do know now,但我现在明白了:is that avoidance and endurance逃避和忍耐can be the entryway to forging meaning. After youve forged meaning,铸造了意义以后,you need to incorporate that meaning你必须把这个意义融入into a new identity. You need to take the traumas and make them part你需要把创伤变成of who youve come to be,你自身的一部分,201410/337796
