When the pressure goes up, this shaft just pulls on it, pulls on the metallic tendon, and that pulls on the joint to make its arm to go forward for example, or back. Most people who hold babies know that the moment babies go to sleep, they seem to gain weight. Of course, a babys weight doesnt really change when they fall asleep, so why does the limp, floppy weight of a sleeping baby seem greater than it actually is? A sleeping baby in your arms feels heavier because you must constantly adjust your own movements to compensate for their floppiness. Your muscles work harder to carry a child whos asleep, and your brain perceives this increase in work as an increase in the childs weight, though, of course, the weight of the baby stays the same. To picture this, think about carrying a twenty-pound bag of water. You would continually have to rearrange how you were holding that bag to make up for how the weight shifted due to the water sloshing around. In a similar way, you must continually adjust how you are holding or carrying a sleeping baby because they arent able to control their own muscles to maintain a steady posture. Their inability to control their posture and movements makes them floppy, just like that bag of water. Now, freeze your twenty-pound bag of water. Though it would be cold and slippery, it would feel lighter because it is a solid weight that doesnt require you to constantly make minute adjustments in order to carry it. This is how you perceive the weight of a conscious person. Babies arent the only ones who seem heavier when they go limp. Dogs and cats also seem to gain weight when they go to sleep. And political protesters take advantage of this phenomenon by completely relaxing their muscles when police try to drag them away from a protest.

IT WAS not that noticeable amid all the razzmatazz. Many viewers missed it. But on February 5th, during the half-time show of the Super Bowl, the apogee of both the sporting and broadcasting year, MIA, a British pop star, unexpectedly sang ;I donrsquo;t give a shit; and raised a middle finger to the cameras. N, the network airing the show, swiftly apologised for her ;inappropriate gesture;. But that, said the Parents Television Council (PTC), which campaigns for more wholesome programming, was an inadequate response to what its members felt was a ;slap in the face; to families across America. Whether any Supreme Court justices were watching, or considered themselves slapped, is unknown. As it happens, however, they are currently mulling over just this sort of incident. Last month they heard arguments in cases involving two other broadcast networks, Fox and A, which are challenging the Federal Communications Commissionrsquo;s restrictions on indecency. The broadcasters think their output should be free from any form of censorship, just as cable television and the internet are. In particular, they object to the FCCrsquo;s rules about ;fleeting expletives; (isolated, and in many cases, unscripted swearing) and brief glimpses of titillating body parts, which are subject to heavy fines. Those rules, in turn, were adopted in part thanks to the uproar prompted by the half-time show of a previous Super Bowl, in which the breast of another wayward pop star was momentarily bared, supposedly due to a ;wardrobe malfunction;. The FCC has long barred profanity and nudity during waking hours, although it used to take a laxer attitude towards isolated incidents. The Supreme Court upheld its rules in 1978, despite their impingement on free speech, on the basis of a law banning smut on the radio. But the broadcasters complain that the FCCrsquo;s drive for decency is inconsistent, unnecessary and increasingly quixotic. Why, they ask, should swearing be permissible in some circumstances (broadcasts of ;Saving Private Ryan;, a gritty war film) but not in others (awards shows populated by foul-mouthed celebrities)? Is it really necessary to protect the public from swear words, when viewers can so easily vote with their remotes? Above all, while the court allowed the airwaves to be policed in 1978 because they were a scarce, publicly owned resource, does that still make sense in an era of cable, satellite and YouTube? After all, some 85% of households in America now subscribe to some sort of pay television, and almost 70% have broadband and thus face constant exposure to cursing and smut. Judging by their questions to the broadcastersrsquo; lawyers, however, not all the justices are convinced. All the government is asking for, said John Roberts, the chief justice, ;is a few channels where you;are not going to hear the s-word, the f-word;. Moreover, as the PTC points out, in spite of the proliferation of viewing options, broadcasters remain pre-eminent. Of the 100 most popular shows last year, 89 were on broadcast networks, not cable. Some 114m people watched this yearrsquo;s half-time show, making it;swearing, middle finger and all;the most widely seen television programme in American history. 201202/171489

books and arts文艺book review书评New fiction新小说Tudor prose都铎王朝那些事儿Bring Up the Bodies. HILARY MANTELS Man Booker prize-winning novel, “Wolf Hall”, was a momentous work about the court of Henry VIII, as seen through the lens of Thomas Cromwell. A blacksmiths boy, Cromwell claws his way up to become Henrys ruthless fixer and one of historys great villains. The book captured the upheavals of the Tudor period and was a critical and popular hit that rescued historical fiction from its bodice-ripper reputation. “Bring Up the Bodies”, Ms Mantels sequel, takes up where “Wolf Hall” left off, and it is an outstandingly good . The year is 1535 and Henry is in middle age, “a massive man, bull-necked, his hair receding, face fleshing out”. His “carriage, his person, are magnificent; his rages are terrifying”. In the first book Henry casts off Catherine of Aragon for Anne Boleyn. Here he tires of Boleyn—who has failed to produce a male heir—and sets to luring Jane Seymour, “modest as a drift of green-white hellebore”. Fans of “Wolf Hall” will relish this book, but “Bring Up the Bodies” also stands alone. Covering a shorter period and with fewer characters, it demands less of the er than the earlier instalment, in which significant historical figures walked on with little introduction. And the story of Boleyn, a glittering queen tamed to a “small voice, empty of everything except politeness”, provides a better narrative arc than Cromwells clamber to the top, and a more grimly dramatic conclusion.《狼厅》的粉丝们会喜欢《死尸示众》,这本书虽是《狼厅》的后续,但它仍有自己的特色。 Like much historical fiction, the pages of this novel are full of lust and splendid outfits. But Ms Mantel achieves much more than that. Her characters are real and vivid people who bring to life the clash of ideals that gripped England at the time. She makes the past present and vital. Boleyns dful end is known before the book is even cracked opened, yet her contemplation of her last moments—“I have only a little neck”—is lonely, sad and shocking. Cromwells thirst for power, meanwhile, has continuing resonance. He finds the product of his scheming less satisfying than the work that went into its contrivance; his whole career, he reflects, “has been an education in hypocrisy”. “Those who are made can be unmade,” Boleyn notes, an idea that echoes through the book. His hard-won power and riches earn him neither love nor succour—he is a man whose only friend is the king of England. As in “Wolf Hall”, Cromwell draws the ers admiration, but never envy. 201206/186295
