SolitudeI find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome, because he is employed; but when he comes home at night he cannot sit down in a room alone, at the mercy of his thoughts, but must be where he can see the folks,” and recreate, and, as he thinks, remunerate himself his day’s solitude; and hence he wonders how the student can sit alone in the house all night and most of the day without ennui and the blues; but he does not realize that the student, though in the house, is still at work in his field, and chopping in his woods, as the farmer in his, and in turn seeks the same recreation and society that the latter does, though it may be a more condensed m of it.Society is commonly too cheap. We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value each other. We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old musty cheese that we are. We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war. We meet at the post-office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other’s way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect one another. Certainly less frequency would suffice all important and hearty communications. Consider the girls in a factory---never alone, hardly in their dreams. It would be better if there were but one inhabitant to a square mile, as where I live. The value of a man is not in his skin, that we should touch him.I have a great deal of company in my house; especially in the morning, when nobody calls. Let me suggest a few comparisons, that some one may convey an idea of my situation. I am no more lonely than the loon in the pond that laughs so loud, or than Walden Pond itself. What company has that lonely lake, I pray? And yet it has not the blue devils, but the blue angels in it, in the azure tint of its waters. The sun is alone, except in thick weather, when there sometimes appear to be two, but one is a mock sun. god is alone---but the devil, he is far from being alone; he sees a great deal of company; he is legion. I am no more lonely than a single mullein or dandelion in a pasture, or a bean leaf, or sorrel, or a horse-fly, or a bumblebee. I am no more lonely than the Millbrook, or a weathercock, or the north star, or the south wind, or an April shower, or a January thaw, or the first spider in a new house.

I worried about this exam a month. But it turned out to be a real snap. In fact, I wouldn't be too surprised to get an "A" out of it. I thought it would take all weekend. But writing it was easy as pie; I finished it Saturday noon and got the rest of the weekend to spend with my wife and daughter. I was scared to death, but the math exam turned out to be a piece of cake!

The Doll and a White RoseI hurried into the local department s tore to grab some last minute Christmas gifts.I looked at all the people and grumbled1) to myself.I would be in here ever and I just had so much to do.Christmas was beginning to become such a drag.I kinda) wished that I could just sleep through Christmas. But I hurried the best I could through all the people to the toy department.Once again I kind of mumbled to myself at the prices of all these toys. And wondered if the grandkids would even play with them.I found myself in the doll aisle3).Out of the corner of my eye I saw a little boy about 5holding a lovely doll.He kept touching her hair and he held her so gently.I could not seem to help myself.I just kept looking over at the little boy and wondered who the doll was .I watched him turn to a woman and he called his aunt by name and said,“Are you sure I don’t have enough money?”She replied a bit impatiently,“You know that you don’t have enough money it.”The aunt told the little boy not to go anywhere that she had to go to get some other things and would be back in a few minutes. And then she left the aisle. The boy continued to hold the doll. After a bit I asked the boy who the doll was .“It is the doll my sister wanted so badly Christmas. She just knew that Santa would bring it.”I told him that maybe Santa was going to bring it.“No,Santa can’t go where my sister is...I have to give the doll to my Mamma to take to her.”I asked him where his sister was.He looked at me with the saddest eyes and said:“She was gone to be with Jesus. My Daddy says that Mamma is going to have to go to be with her.”My heart nearly stopped beating. Then the boy looked at me again and said,“I told my Daddy to tell Mamma not to go yet.I told him to tell her to wait till I got back from the store.”Then he asked me if I wanted to see his picture.I told him I would love to.He pulled out some pictures he’d had taken at the front of the store.“I want my Mamma to take this with her so she won’t ever get me.I love my Mamma so very much and I wish she did not have to leave me.But Daddy says she will need to be with my sister.”I saw that the little boy had lowered his head and had grown so very quiet. While he was not looking I reached into my purse and pulled out a handful of bills.I asked the little boy,“Shall we count that money one more time?”He grew excited and said, “Yes,I just know it has to be enough.”So I slipped my money in with his and we beg an to count it.Of course it was plenty t he doll.He softly said,“Thank you Jesus giving me enough money.”Then the boy said,“I just asked Jesus to give me enough money to buy this doll so Mamma can take it with her to give to my sister. And he heard my prayer.I wanted to ask him enough to buy my Mamma a white rose, but I didn’t ask him,but he gave me enough to buy the doll and a rose my Mamma. She loves white roses so very, very much.”In a few minutes the aunt came back and I wheeled my cart away.I could not keep from thinking about the little boy as I finished my shopping in a totally different spirit than when I had started. And I kept remembering a story I had seen in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunk driver hitting a car and killing a little girl and the Mother was in serious condition. The family was deciding on whether to remove the life support. Now surely this little boy did not belong with that story. Two days later I in the paper where the family had disconnected the life support and the young woman had died.I could not get the little boy and just kept wondering if the two were somehow connected.Later that day,I could not help myself and I went out and bought some white roses and took them to the funeral) home where the young woman was.And there she was holding a lovely white rose, the beautiful doll, and the picture of the little boy in the store.I left there in tears,my life changed ever.

I used to watch her from my kitchen window, she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during recess. A sea of children, and yet to me, she stood out from them all. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation she said,"I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count." Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again. Well, I had to give it to her--- she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her varsity team to victory. One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came to a soft reply. "I'm just too short." The coach told her that at"5'5" she would probably never get to play a top ranked team -- much less offered a scholarship -- so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just didn't understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she really wanted to play a good college, if she truly wanted a scholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing -- her own attitude. He told her again," if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count." The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern Calinia Championship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division I, NCAA women's basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward all those years. It's true If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.
